Tanzania: Shifting of Shallow Water Wells Affected by Inundation in Coastal Regions

Sea level rise threatens water supply in coastal Tanzania due to salinization of the water table. Lack of steady water supply forces women to travel long distances for water, which takes time away from other activities. In other cases, families purchase water, which can be expensive. Farm operations are compromised by inavailability of irrigation. Diseases are more prevalent due to water shortages. The overall objective of this project is to construct new water wells to enable people affected by inundation to have reliable access to clean water for drinking and other development processes in Bagamoyo district. Specific actions include: (a) a survey to identify wells that have been inundated by sea water; (b) chemical testing of these wells to determine the extent of the problem; (c) a survey of alternative water sources available to these communities; (d) rehabilitation of existing wells not overly inundated by sea water; (e) creation of new water sources through drilling of bore-holes; and (f) training in the sustainable use of water. Secondary components include the promotion of alternative income strategies to reduce pressure on coastal resources and the promotion of good land management practices.
