The City of Rio de Janeiro’s Municipal Secretariat of Social Development created the Community Reforestation Project in 1986. The project, also referred to as the Paid Self-Help Reforestation Project and the Mutirão Project, aims to control erosion and reduce the associated land slide and flood risks through the reforestation of erosion-prone areas of the city, particularly where favelas (squatter settlements) are located.
